"Emily" - 18" Copper Mist (The Brave)
« on: May 24, 2022, 12:02:08 PM »

Thanks to a heads up by a local grillfella and fellow WKC member, I picked up this nice Brave last week. It was listed on Facebook Marketplace and was about six blocks from my house.  Seller was the daughter of the kettle's owner.  The owner is named Emily who is 99 years old and purchased the kettle new. Emily has always done all the grilling/cooking on the kettle and has outlived her husband and a boyfriend after that. Turns out Emily's house was only about two blocks from my childhood home.  Growing up, I use to walk by the house weekly walking to visit friends. Here are the photos from the Facebook Marketplace add.

RESTORATION: Bowl vents were all frozen. Two days of soaking with PB Blaster and gentle tapping with small hammer freed them up. Lid and bowl were razor scrapped, legs and ash pan were sanded and polished, wheel white walls repainted, original wood handle sanded and several coats of Tung oil applied. Rust removed from triangle and then installed correctly. Most original Weber wood handles from this period don't have the heavy visible grains that this one does. Appears to possibly be Oak rather than Walnut.

I have a habit of giving names to kettles I pick up. In honor of the owner, I named this kettle "Emily". I believe it is a 73/74 according to the WKC age guide. I did send the seller finished restoration photos of the kettle so she could show her Mom, Emily.  She said it looked like new.

WOW! That turned out fantastic. It indeed does look like new. I'm sure Emily will be pleased to see the photos.

Beautiful kettle and great job on the resto.  It's really cool when you have the historical info on a kettle and to think that the kettle was there and in service, possibly being cooked on as you walked up the street as a child!  Amazing story and kettle, thanks for sharing.

That’s a beautiful story and a stunning restore. The fact she cooked on it for her family all those Years is a testament to why we love these kettles. I mean look at it. It’s ready to go for a few more generations. Grate job !

As I was reading this I was thinking to myself “I really hope that Emily gets to see the restored pictures” so I was chuffed to find out that she did.
