1990 Outrider 18.5" never used
« on: April 07, 2022, 04:42:26 AM »
I'm new to this site and I'm looking for some advise on a grill that is online.  Were the grills built in 1990 any better than the ones built today.  I think the Outrider was started in 1990 but what would be a fair price to pay or should I go out and buy a new one. Here is the grill that I'm looking at online.  Thank you!

As you probably know, the Outrider is now out of production.  They come up every now and again on FB Marketplace, Ebay, etc.  I was fortunate to find one a couple years back for $20 - had to clean it up but it looks like new now.  Built better?  Seems to be standard Weber stock construction.  Vent placement?  I'm not sold on the bottom vent placement, but then again I've never used it - just going by what others have said.  The green and red ones go for a lot of money, and the black ones are more commonly found.  If you're not super interested in that particular model, but the size of grate you might consider looking at the Jumbo Joes which are readily available.  The bottom vent is placed at the bottom under the coals, so in theory it should allow the coals to breathe easier than the Outrider.  Hope that helps......

If you truly need the vents above the coals instead of below the coals because of camping, for instance, then the outrider is great.  If you simply need a small, portable cooker, get the new portable Jumbo Joe and call it a day.

Thank You for the help.  Looks like several people are bidding on the Outrider on eBay so I think I will move on to Jumbo Joe.

The Jumbo Joe is awesome. You won’t regret the purchase.

They are both great for average cooking times but for long cooks the outrider hands down is better. When ash falls down in a jumbo joe it clogs the only airway it has, bad for long cooks.

Is the only difference between an Outrider and a Jumbo Joe the location of air vents? Did Outrider production stop in a certain year and JJ’s start after that. I have a P date code from 1993. Which name applies to it?

The bowl of the Outrider is deeper. Exact same bowl as an 18" three-legged kettle

There was a period of time when the Outrider was actually called a Jumbo Joe.
I don't know when, though. It then became a Smokey Joe Platinum.

I personally love the Outrider for low'n'slow.  Have done butts and brisket on one.

I got an N code outrider for free off the side of the road earlier in the year in Australia. Has definitely become one of my favourite kettles.

+1 for the current version Jumbo Joe. My favorite kettle when cooking for two or three.

Scored this on the weekend. I think they just look better than the jumbo joes.

That's not entirely true.  The regular Kettle has grate straps welded in, while the Outrider bowl has the formed ring to support the cooking grate.  The consequence of this is that the Outrider takes a slightly larger (17-7/8") grate that's not interchangeable with the regular Kettle or the modern Jumbo Joe.
