Just a friendly reminder. I'll spare you all the visual, but I stepped on a decent sized coal that fell out unnoticed when dumping the chimney. I'm on day 8 and still limping. Always wear shoes.

SMOKE FREAK

I've melted the bottom of countless shoes over the years.
Sorry for your pain and suffering.

I did the same thing last year, full weight on my heel and a coal burned into it.  I now have a pair of dedicated slip on sandals at the back door that go on any time I'm grilling.  This is definitely one of those "I've been burned before" lessons.  Hope you're pain free very soon.

I thought I stepped on a small coal several yrs ago. I jumped, and yelped. Funny thing was it didn't fall off during the leap. Turned out to be a bee!
I too wear something on my feet at all times to grill.

Great advice.  That hurts even thinking about it:(

SMOKE FREAK

No man respects the flame like the one who's been badly burnt.

I wish you could see hubby! I'm grilling on back deck (with shoes on) and he's burning brush in backyard. Sudden explosion of gas fire and him stripping while running toward house. He's not allowed to touch my grills, ever!

In my case, the coal pressed smack-dab in the middle of the bottom of my foot, half way between the heel and ball. The 'Small' of the foot, if that makes sense. Not a lot of callus there. So the coal had no trouble hitting the muscle and tendon. Still waiting to see if it is going to heal properly or if I'll need surgery/skin graft. And I'm usually adamant about footwear, but I was out in the garage working on something else, and I thought, ' oh look, a Weber kettle that's not burning coals....that's not right.' So I got it going, barefoot, and presto- I'm an idiot. Wear shoes kids.

This is only one reason why we always light the coals inside the kettle, not outside.

I did light the chimney in the kettle, but it was lump charcoal, which is all different sizes and shapes, and one of the smaller ones fell through the bottom of the chimney, outside the grill, as I tipped it over. Never saw it, but I felt it :o
