This post makes me smile. :) I can only hope to do as great a job on my first kettle and beyond. Some great ideas here for a noob like me.
Thanks bud!  It's all about enjoying what we do and having fun - for me anyway.  And I've met some pretty cool people here with lots of great advice and ideas shared.  A lot of my posts include the word "fun".  We need more of that in this world IMO.....so, have fun!

@DaGoomba

I second the river country thermos, I've been using them for 12 or 13 years on everything from stick burners to electric smokers and kettles. They are inexpensive, hermetically sealed, accurate and adjustable.

I just received a 5" I plan on mounting on my new 26" premium kettle. I know it seems like sacrilege to drill into new kettles, but mine are all intended to be users and a well placed thermo works wonders on achieving great, consistent bbq.

Yep!

I actually may have to return it, it requires a 13/16" hole! I don't have a bit that large and it would definitely cost more than the thermo.

I got a step bit set from Amazon for that kind of stuff.  Works well....

In a perfect world there would be a thermometer that can be installed in the stock location that has a remote sensor that can be placed under the lid wherever you want.

What are you using for a port hole on that kettle? Looks to me to be a 3/4 EMT to box adapter.

I'm wondering...does the 3" stem under the vent get in the way of larger cuts like brisket or pork shoulder? I have an old tel-tru with a 3" stem. I was thinking of installing there but wondered about clearance for that length.
