I've been banking directly on the kettle walls for years with no problem. I wouldn't do it on a collectible kettle but I haven't had any problem on my black kettles I use everyday.

I never had an issues on my 22 for many years.  Also no issues so far on my 26er but thanks man I'll keep any eye out

I've gotten similar results from my Fireboard and SNS equipped 26".  I triple wrap the grate in HD Foil covering the same areas as that insert.   The key is making sure to take the extra time and fully seal off the sides of the grate

That's what i was doing before.  I was bored and had an idea.. the one thing I like is I can flip it over with and put It on the grate and use it for smash burgers
