Picked this up at a local butcher today.  I don't think it is actually a tri tip. Any thoughts on what it is or am I incorrect?

You can't trust your butcher? Time to call Sam.

Hahaha...brand new butcher shop.  Never been before.  But you guy's on here are way more seasoned.  That's why I asked for your thoughts!

I totally have to trust my butcher, because I still can never tell what I'm looking at.

Tri tip comes from the bottom tip of the sirloin . Picanha comes from the top . Never seen a tri tip shaped like that . Could be the way they butchered it ?

Coulette is the same as Picanha I believe, and that appears to be what that is, I'd do it that way, as it is delicious - about 2 inch strips, against the grain, reverse sear.  Salt is the only thing I add to them.  I usually skewer like they do in the Brazilian restaurants, but then cut like steaks.  It is delicious.

It does not look like tritip, and I've seen picture of picanha, and that looks very similar. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BfrLwnUDyg

Thanks everyone for your feedback.  I appreciate it!

So I cooked it as if it was a top sirloin cap/picanha and it turned out great. Reverse sear. Homemade chimichurri. This was so delicious

Thank you.  This was a delicious cut of meat.  I was very pleasantly surprised.

I have had the same issue with local butchers.  They label sirloin caps incorrectly as tri-tips.   I have also learned not to doubt/question a butcher regarding their knowledge of beef cuts.

I wasn't doubting/questioning a butcher and their knowledge of beef cuts.  What I was questioning was the label on the package and I firmly believe this was mislabeled.

I ended up a winner regardless.  I would be happy to have that cut of meat again.
