How far in advance do you apply rub on your brisket?  I usually do overnight. Trying to find what Aaron Franklin does, but can't pin it down.

Night before is fine. You can also just put it on 15-30 minutes before it hits the cooker.

I light the coals...Then season the meat...Of course on my stick burner it takes an hour or more to heat it up...Still...I entirely to lazy to do it the night before...

This. I don't marinade. Just a salt and pepper rub before the brisket goes on the grill. And sometimes if I get a wild hair I rub the whole thing down with some good spicy mustard and then hit it with pepper after that. I don't use salt in that case because the mustard is salty enough. It makes a nice crust but it is kinda not necessarily very traditional so as always, check local laws and ordinances before trying this at home, folks :-}

Beer! It's what's for dinner...
