Kingsford Pecan fail.

So I've been using Kingsford charcoal since, well longer than I want to admit to. It's been decades literally.... Usually either Mesquite, or original with wood chunk for smoke / flavor.

Walmart had some Kingsford Pecan, which is cool since the wood chunks I typically use are pecan.

I have had this happen 3 times already, so I know it isn't not being lit properly or anything like that...

Fill the charcoal chimney light it off, and wait until the top coals are ashed over before I dump.

Doesn't matter, configured direct, or indirect, but within 30 minutes, the coals just go out. Vent positions on the kettle don't matter, its's done this in the JJP and the SJ.

Anyone else experience this with any of Kingsford's smoking wood blends?

Weird. Are you using a charcoal basket? If not, consider it. When they’re spread out / isolated from one another, they die faster.

I hardly ever do a full chimney anymore.
3/4 at best.
The other 1/4 is in the baskets unlit.
When the top briqs in the chimney have solid grey edges
I dump it in the baskets on the unlit.
Put the grate on and while the grill preheats
the coals ignite and we're ready to go.

If you wait until the top coals in chimney are ashed over completely
the bottom coals are almost burnt up.

I seem to get a much more consistent heat for a longer time this way.

Extinguish.

Never had any other Kingsford coals do that...

Never had that happen, but I don't use the smoke blends.

I wonder if the smoke blends require more airflow, which a Jumbo Joe Premium does not offer, due to the squat bowl shape and lesser intake area. Perhaps it's a perfect storm kinda thing.

I've only had the issue with the pecan not Mesquite. There is certainly No Lack of air flow with this Jumbo Joe premium.

...wow - thanks for this!! I never even thought of doing this with my chimney (I also use 3/4 full but dump the whole lot into my empty baskets)!!
