Using SnS would be no different than putting lump directly on the charcoal grate without a SnS, in terms of smaller pieces falling through.  If you plan on using lump regularly, get SnS+.....

When I'm using my SnS original And doing hot n fast, I put a layer of unlit briquettes down first then  put fired up lump on top. Works for me

I have the SNS xl in my 26 which has the bottom grate like the plus. I am not a big lump guy but got 40# for Christmas and the plus addition makes it nice
Seeking a Black Sequoia I know I know, I'd settle for just the tabbed no leg grill

Years ago when I used to burn a lot more lump.
(had a REALLY cheap source for Humphries)

I cut a circle of 1/2" expanded sheet metal and
plopped it down on top of the charcoal grate to
help hold the smaller embers in place.

Same thing can be done by doubling up
charcoal grates and aligning them 90
degrees from each other.

I have the plus and use last mo all the time for chicken and reverse sear. I like it with briquettes too. It helps keep the small bits in the basket so I would assume it holds the temp longer and makes it easier to reuse spent coals he next time. Also there is not enough clearance from top of basket to grate to crisscross another charcoal grate on top of the other.

I have the regular slow n sear and I've had no trouble with lumpwood falling out of the bottom. I suppose if you have trouble with your lumpwood falling through the bottom grate then without the slow n sear then you should go for the Plus.

From my perspective, the only advantage to the Plus is making it easier to deal with leftover charcoal.  Just pick it up and shake out the dust.

For that, I would probably have gotten the Plus if it had been available.
