It's stainless... I work next to a heating and air shop, it still cost me $50.. but was fun to "DIY".  You might be able to find some "rems" at a similar shop.. mine was actually 2 pieces that they spot welded together. I then made the final size and screwed the 2 ends together. It sits on the grate tabs in the kettle

You are correct. Was making a small ring the other day & "needed" 80 inches of material. Checked my math - oops... wrong formula.  :P
