Q: LP Canisters

Quick question:
How long will a canister last when cooking on a Q?

Are you carmelizing an onion or are you cooking a side of beef?  Is it a little propane bottle or a 40 tank?  a little Q or a big Q.. because preheat/burnoff is larger.

So really, it varies.. I'm sure someone has better numbers.

Not sure yet as to what I will be cooking.  Looking at the 1000/1200 or 2000/2200 models for the camping trip as noted in other thread.  If I get one, I am trying to figure out how many small LP bottles I would burn through, or if it makes sense to get hose adapter and one large 20LB tank.

Personally I wouldn’t want to lug a big tank around unless you were already planning on one. Based on using my coleman stove days, I’d plan on using a small can every other day or so. So maybe start off with 8 cans and see how it goes.

@JEBIV , thank you!  I am pretty psyched about it.  I get sabbatical next year and this will be part of it.....it is something of a dream of mine, to travel with my family this way, seeing some amazing things, and spending a little time with my kids before they begin to tune me and their mother out....I hope we eat well too.

Sounds like the 20lb tank would be a good investment, given the amount of travel, and the fact that it only takes a few 1lb tanks to take up as much storage space as one 20lb tank, yeah? But keep a 1lb as backup, as that Weber adapter hose that lets you use a 20lb tank can be finicky, and you'd need to be near enough to a HD/Lowe's or wherever to get a new one, I think.

This was on clearance at Walmart recently.   I paid $5.99.   Works for the GGA and newer Performers as well.

I use the tank at home and the small bottles for travel.  I can get 4 or 5 short cooks from a 1lb bottle on my q1000  (Steaks, chicken breasts sliced in half-thickness).   A 20 lb tank lasts months on my q220 and I usually only exchange it once per year.  Maybe 2x if I get to doing long cooks like spatchcock chickens.  The small bottles are great for travel and pack much better than a larger tank if space is going to be an issue in a vehicle or camper.  You will get tired of loading and unloading the larger tank, but the 1lb bottles can be packed in a box with the rest of the grill accessories or under the lid of the grill.  I refill the small bottles to save a few dollars but they are cheap enough and available where they can be easily restocked on a long road trip.
