Grilled Oysters on the Beach
« on: August 06, 2017, 10:20:18 PM »
The cousins and I decided to get together for a beach day. We all met up about an hour north of San Francisco at Bodega Bay. On the way over from Sacramento I stopped to pick up about a 100 fresh oysters from a local farm. I cooked up a couple tri tips as well just in case someone was not feeling the oysters. It is always great grilling for family.

This was my first time cooking on my yellow that I scored off LetGo for cheap. I could not believe the color change. It turned into a glowing orange kettle after she was all warmed up.

And it is cold enough that you need a coat. Nice. And potatoes and maybe I see some bok choy? Great cookup.

It was freezing. I'm in Sacramento where it is a high of about 100 everyday. Over at the ocean it was a high of 65 today.

Not pictured is some grilled romaine, a Cowgirl Creamery cheese spread and some fresh bread. I heated up some fresh butter on the grill and had a dozen lemons from my back orchard for the oysters.

Wow...wow!
What's the move with the oysters? Just cook 'em til they pop open, direct or indirect?

@WNC  the oysters are very easy. There are a few ways to do them. Today I just cooked them over direct until they popped - about 5 minutes. Once they popped I drained the water on the coals and tossed them in a big pile on the table. Everyone opened them up and added some butter, lemon, hot sauce or BBQ sauce. Some of them I tossed back on the grill once they were sauced and cooked down the sauce to concentrate it a bit.

Great spread you put together there! It reminds me of North Carolina. Bushels of oysters and blue crab. I really miss that stuff. Thanks for sharing!

Nice cook and looked like a great time was had by all.  I could use a 65º day.  I would be wearing a jacket too!

Looks great Pete! I've never really tried oysters closed like that...I usually cook them on the half shell with the ingredients you described. Your tri tips look good too! Thanks for sharing. We have to get a Sac cookout together!
