How close to the house?
« on: May 27, 2017, 10:05:43 AM »
How close to the house are you guys keeping your grills? I have my kettle, WSM, and a genesis that I use regularly and was planning on putting by the house. I know Weber says like 5 feet away but I think that is overkill. Anyone ever melt their vinyl siding? If so, how close were you?

All brick exterior. Only thing I do is make sure I'm far away for the chimney. After that I'm 3-4 feet away.

I'm in the roofing and siding business. Keep any hot grill far away from vinyl siding. It will melt it easily. It doesn't even have to be that hot. Plenty of vinyl siding gets damaged or starts fires by being close to vinyl

I wouldn't worry about brick. I used to have aluminum and I would grill close to it in the rain without a problem but I was careful. Fiber cement MIGHT be ok. I haven't run across grill damage on it

If you have foam backing or fanfold insulation, stay away from it. It catches fire if you show it a picture of a flame. Nasty toxic plumes too

Old asbestos siding would be fine [emoji3]. That shit lasts forever.

Oh yeah. 5' is not overkill for vinyl. Weber is correct.  I would be at least that far

I stay a long ways away from the house but I am under a pergola over the patio which has on occasion concerned me a bit. I know the odds of that catching on fire from the grill are really low, but the humiliation I'd feel if it did would be so immense I still worry about it.

Yeah, vinyl siding is a bitch. 5 feet is not unreasonable for sure.
Multiple kettles and WSM's. I am not a collector, just a gatherer... and a sick bastard.
