So always thinking of ways one can do what we all do without having to spend $ i thought of this.

Why bother with lighter fluid(yuk I know) or starter cubes and the such when theres always some left over cooking grease in the cast iron pans or what not that one could collect and then smear some on the starter coal at the beginning of a snake or on a couple at the bottom of the pile of coal in your chimney?

Think that would work? Seems like a waste to just throw it out.

Soak a paper towel in liquid waste fat like that and use it to light your chimney.
Works like a champ.
I've got Webers. 10 - WSMs, 5 - 22.5" kettles, 2 - 18.5" kettle, 2 - SJS, 2 - SJP, 4 - WGA, 1 vintage Coolie Pan

1 or 2 sheets of newspaper in the bottom of the chimney is all it takes for me.

I know there are other more traditional ways but I figured it was a good use of something that would be discarded anyway.

I think it would work fine but seems like a lot of effort.  Never any shortage of junk mail in my house to start a chimney!

I use my weed burner mostly, except when I'm traveling with a kettle, then I use a can of Sterno under the chimney... Works like a charm. Learned that trick at a BBQ comp from Harry Soo of "Slap Yo' Daddy" BBQ Team fame.
Multiple kettles and WSM's. I am not a collector, just a gatherer... and a sick bastard.

@walley_eye - I wipe down my CI pans with a paper towel after every cook... the grease-soaked paper towels go into a container. Whenever I fire up the grill (if I'm not using the gas assist on the SSP), I put 1-3 paper towels under the chimney. Works great!!

You could make pubecubes with that grease. Dryer lint and grease.

I have used stale corn chips too. That works as well...
Lets just say I have acquired a few Kettles.  Big and small.   Vintage and New...  Some say I have a problem.  I find the Kettle, buy the Kettle, USE the Kettle...No problem...

I cant believe I never thought of storing used paper towels from my cast iron in a separate container. Great idea!
