Was at wal mart yesterday and they had this charcoal on sale for 7.84 for a 2 pkg, so I bought one and thought I would try it on the summit. loaded up the bottom and lit it this what it did.

This where it was when I started and it was dropping

This was where it was at after 18 hrs. I shut it down because I was going to be gone all day and I will see how much  charcoal is left tomorrow

They  were 11 lbs. per bag and it was 2 bags in a pkg. I went back and got 4 more bags because it seamed like it did ok for that price.

This is what's left of the charcoal after I stirred it, I would say that's not bad for this charcoal after 18 hrs. at around 250

Charcoal savings alone, will pay for a summit... In a couple dozen years.

Seriously though. That's damn impressive.
Still need a 22" yellow

RO is nice coal, but this insulated concept on the summit is phenomenal.

Btw, I've had dead oak limbs make hot coals in a "Burn Barrel" lasting 3-4 days (un-insulated & Not damper-ed)

I'm shopping for a >55 gal drum to toy with insulating my UDS (likely just cut and expand another drum & fill the gap w/ strap of sheet metal)

...BOBBING FOR COALS IN MY KETTLE

Sounds like a great plan

Yes - those are awesome. RO has another kind in a red bag. Those natural briquettes from do it best are awesome.

Here is a little briq to briq comparison.

Left to right

TJ's natural (rancher)
Humphrey natural - I would buy these if I had a local supplier

Royal Oak red bag

Royal Oak brown bag natural

No, they were the red bags, called ridge charcoal.

Thanks @irv39 - I'll keep an eye out for them in a red bag.

These are the only ones I've seen around here from Royal Oak.  Embers Ridge.
