And it's Roti for the win!
« on: December 07, 2015, 07:07:43 PM »
While figuring out whether or not I should get the rotisserie attachment for my kettle I read people's posts saying beer can chicken was just as good.  Well today I finally did the test.  I had two chickens, same size, same freshness, yada, yada, yada.  I cooked one on a beer can rig inside a homemade vortex with coals surrounding and one on the rotisserie. The rotisserie chicken was far better!  More juicy, more evenly cooked and tasted better.   Not sure if I'll ever do beer can again.

I really need a roti. Couple months ago there was a MT with roti for $90 on local CL. It was listed for a couple weeks, so I thought I could talk him down. Made a $70 offer. He declined. Figured I could wait a day or two. After a couple days, I was about to go for $90. Gone.
Still need a 22” yellow

And - you could have put both chickens on one rotisserie!

Yeah, love the rotisserie, for me it's the only way to cook a whole chicken!

Anyone try two different types of meat on one rotisserie?  Thought crossed my mind to try doing chicken and pork at the same time but I chickened out.

I find I can never get crispy skin.  How was the skin on the roti?

It was I guess medium crispy.  I didn't dry it in the fridge first.

What you can do, roti or not, is heat two baskets of charcoal with a spare kettle or whatever, lift the chicken out of the way and add/replace coals to what you have (or just dump in a full chimney of hot coals) to ramp up the heat for a crispy finish.

...Not sure if I'll ever do beer can again.

Never done one personally, but the vertical orientation can help with space, especially on a smaller grill. However, when considering non-rotisserie chicken, there's one word in particular you need to know:

SPATCHCOCK.

Well, I did do beer can again or rather beer can style as I just use a beer can rack.  I did it because my roti was busy spinning prime rib.  This one turned out very good but still prefer the roti.

I've tried spatchcock and did like it when I didn't have the previously mentioned options, I prefer the roti.

Thanks. I haven't cooked chickens any way but split or spatchcocked in years, but am really looking forward to trying out the rotisserie my wife got me for Christmas.
