I've experimented with many method before and after my getting gas assist performer.
My latest trick: Use the two flames on the gas assist to light two weber compact chimneys at once. Fastest light time of any any method I've tried.

The gas assist is too easy to not use and works great...I always use it.  Lights up coals perfectly
