@Craig  Yes the 1954 (without axle) does have a black lid vent.  There is another picture of this grill floating around.  Second hand info - The 1954 is still in the original owner's family and is considered a family heirloom.  That is pretty cool.

That's good to hear that it survives in the original family and is considered an heirloom. I would love to hear the story behind it and any memories the family has of using it over the years.
