Well I had to try it..... I took the posts from
@Idahawk http://weberkettleclub.com/forums/bbq-food-pics/oklahoma-grilled-onion-burgers-(-my-take-)/ and
@Bbqmiller http://weberkettleclub.com/forums/bbq-food-pics/oklahoma-grilled-hamburgers-take-two/ to create my take..... I made a couple of mistakes but, IMHO, end result was awesome.
I use my wsm table as my work/staging area
Also
@addicted-to-smoke came up with a brilliant suggestion to use my gas burner for starting the chimney. Worked GREAT and FAST!
I did the onions and pressed the burger same as original. Also my wife deep fried some fries for the side
One change I made from the original was based on a quote I remember - "
if a rock was wrapped in bacon - I'd eat it!" .... So I added bacon.
After bacon was cooked I removed it and put the burgers on the griddle.... used the griddle for this side as Bbqmiller did but kept the sear grate for 2nd side
this is where a big oops came in ..... I never took the bacon off the grill
- who knows why?
It ended up a bit crispy to say the least
Burgers all done on side one and ready for the flip to searing grate. Move to staging area
Searing grate in and burgers flipped on side 2 .... that's when I noticed oops #2 - I just might have left them on the griddle a little toooooo long. Onions are just a little past carmalized!!
Add some cheese and bacon to hide the "caramelized" onions plus a charred bun and we are ready to eat.
Even with the burnt onion it was tasty and juicy...
