Cleaning Top Vent

If I am cleaning a vent for a total restoration, I use #0000 steel wool and finish with several buffing applications of Supra Rolite.  It is a aluminum polish used in the airplane industry.  Brian @zavod44 turned me on to the stuff. It's expensive stuff but much faster than Mother's Mag Polish.  If you don't do a lot of restorations, Mothers Mag Polish will work, just takes longer.  If your going to cook with the kettle, I would recommend just using #0000 steel wool, with an occasional cleaning with simple green and a rag.

I guess I should have said,,,,,,any used grills I buy gets a good cleaning down to brand new condition. Who knows what they cooked in them, rat, horse meat, etc. After that, i don't worry about the vent or the lid and bowl unless it starts flaking off. If that happens, I take my wire brush and clean off the loose stuff, scrape the bowl out with a plastic putty knife and cook on. Foil under the offset side save a lot of clean up. The top vent is a badge of honor like said

. So it's the smokey muck creeping from underneath I want to clean. It just want her to shine. Maybe I need to change my mind set and look at it as a badge of honor.

I use a very small flat blade screwdriver.  As long as you keep the blade of the screwdriver flat on the porcelain, at a slight angle, you can gently scrape that crud off.  Be careful to not use the sides of the blade as it can and will scratch the porcelain.
