My first Turkey cook on a 22.5 OTG
« on: January 01, 2015, 08:02:10 PM »
I bought a 14lb frozen turkey the week of thanksgiving and didn't plan on holding out onto it this long, but i cooked it today on 1-1-15. This bird was $7 (.49/lb), so even if i failed it wasn't going to be a waste of money. Never cooked a turkey before, period.

This is the recipe i used.

I will say doing some researched i was concerned about comments of the bird sitting in juice the whole time. I think it was fine, it made it juicy i must say. I also had a pan underneath it with water that i did have to top it off after the first hour.
Putting the bird in a roaster pan helped me move it around and bringing it inside.
Was concerned that the popper didn't pop, but the wife said on Cooks Kitchen they said they are a waste. I did test it at 175+ in the breast and other parts. Came out fine when i started to cut into it. Was cooking for 2.5 hours. Wish it was a little longer, but i had people waiting to eat and it was like 7:00pm.

I use the iGrill Mini here, i like it but i think i would invest in the bigger one. I tend to use it to monitor the temp of grill rather then the food itelf.

Can't see it in the pic, but did have some nice smoke ring from the apple chips i used.

That is a fine looking cook-up there!!

I would cook turkey all the time if I could get it for 49¢/lb.  :)
Q: How do you know something is bull$h!t?
A: When you are not allowed to question it.
