Two packs of royal oak groove briquettes at our k mart for 5.99.  28 lbs in total.  Not sure as a newb, but picked a couple as it seemed like a good deal.  They had a lot of bbq stuff on clearance

anytime you get briquettes for close to $ 0.20 per lbs it is a good deal.
I am not a collector, but I do have a small collection.

I'd buy a bunch at that price.

Going back tomorrow to buy more if they have any!

...that crunchy sound you just heard was me deciding to go to K-Mart tomorrow.  Thanks!!

I am just hoping they didn't sell out yet.  Home Depot was selling single bags for $9.99!

OK, this morning, my K-Mart still had about 20 of the 2-packs left.  I bought 4 more.

Good luck, Mike!

Thanks for the tip!  My store had a bunch piled up in the Garden Center.  It was marked at like $8 for twin 13.9 packs, but it rang up at $5.99.  I've never used RO briquettes, so I'm going to give it a try for the next couple of days and see if I want to get some more (I still have a lot of Kingsford Blue from several seasons back).  I'm starting to feel a chill in the air and my primal urge to stock up on charcoal for the winter is kicking in...  I *hate* paying full price for charcoal in March-- that's a bitter taste of defeat that is not soon forgotten, my friends.

The other grills and accessories on clearance was all Sears/Kenmore, which I'm not too impressed with.

Royal Oak Briquetts are OK, but better than full price in March......

Mike, in my research on charcoal, some seem to love RO briquets.  Definitely a step above KBB from what I have been reading.

I may be in for a letdown as I did my first two cooks with Stubbs briquets, but it was worth $36 to get 167lbs of charcoal!

The accessories I bought were the digital thermometer for $7.99 and a pair of the bbq gloves for I think 9.99.  They had some Kenmore red 4 burner gas grill for $219, but it seemed kind of flimsy.  We are going to hold out and get a Weber one when we can find a gold brick somewhere!  The $499 one seems pretty nice.  It has a griddle built in.

I'm not sure if it's true, but supposedly the Outdoor Gourmet brand, at Academy, is made by Royal Oak.

Picked up 2-2 packs at k-mart for 11.90 might go back for a couple more later today.

I tried it last night, and found it to light quickly and burn a long time.  It did leave some of that 'briquette' flavor (kind of a petroleum taste) on the food.  Though to be fair only my wife could taste it much (she's got better taste buds than I do), and it was definitely an acid test-- smoked meat loaf, which in my experience absorbs far more flavor than anything else.  I'm sure it would be less of a problem on other kinds of food.  And I'd expect it to work great for Dutch Oven cooking, which is something I vastly prefer briquettes for (vs. lump).

Sorry it was a little disappointing, Mike...but I hope you get your money's worth in the Dutch Oven!

I committed to it big time, so I will be using it for a while, seeing as I now have 12 bags! lol
